Oil Reserves and Oil Production by Country
Description
The map I created represents proven oil reserves and daily oil production by country. The height shows oil reserves, and the color corresponds to daily oil production.
The largest oil reserves are located in Venezuela (304 billion barrels), followed by Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Canada, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait.
These countries (except Canada, perhaps) are usually associated with oil, but the key point is that just these seven countries constitute 75% of all worldwide oil reserves, with Venezuela holding 17% of all reserves.
At the same time, the US has only 74 billion barrels on its soil (a bit less than Russia – 80 billion). Yet the United States is the most active in oil production – 13 million barrels per day. At the current extraction rate, the country’s own reserves will last about 15 years. The next most active producers are Saudi Arabia (~11 million barrels per day, ~80 years of production) and Russia (~11 million barrels per day, ~20 years of production).
Oil is extremely important for the economy, and global demand keeps growing every year. This creates major challenges for many countries, including balancing production with sustainability, energy security, and the transition to renewable sources.
